A three-day adult education program and a Revolutionary War encampment will be featured this spring as part of the 225th anniversary of the Articles of Confederation.
"Nine Months in York Town" is a celebration of the Continental Congress' stay in York from September 30, 1777 through June 27, 1778. During that time, the country's first constitution - The Articles of Confederation -- was adopted by Congress, the first Thanksgiving Proclamation was issued to commemorate the new nation's victory at Saratoga, and France officially adopted treaties pledging its financial support to the American cause.
On April 24 - 26, a three-day adult education program "Crucible of a Nation" will introduce participants to York's role in the beginnings of the country through architecture, costume, traditional crafts, and lifestyle. Lectures and tours of historic sites in downtown York, and southeastern and western York County are included. Pennsylvania certified educators will be awarded Act 48 hours for attending these programs. Reservations are required. (Is it possible to include the registration form again?)
As part of the Olde York Street Fair on Sunday, May 11, free programs featuring the French Alliance will be held at the exact replica of the Colonial Courthouse. Hourly tours will highlight the signing of the French treaties, the Treaty of Amity and Commerce and the Treaty of Alliance. To make the event even more realistic, a Revolutionary War-era encampment will be set up on the grounds of the Colonial Courthouse. Interpreters, portraying Colonial soldiers and townspeople, will demonstrate the numerous influences the French have had on the American Army and way of life. Activities include firing exhibitions with French muskets, cooking, and kids' crafts and games.
At the Historical Society Museum, just a few blocks away, an Old Fashion Ice Cream Parlor will include examples of the French influence on American society. There will be a cost for treats.
