"The Pen is Mightier....":
Documents from York Town and the American Revolution.

An exciting exhibition of documents will be on exhibit at the York County Heritage Trust from November 2, 2002 to February 1, 2003, as part of the Nine Months in York Town celebration.

Included are original documents and correspondence written to and by the patriots who were associated with Continental Congress while it was meeting in York Town from September 1777 - June 1778. They include letters of John and Abigail Adams, Thomas Paine, George Washington, Patrick Henry, the Marquis de Lafayette, Henry Laurens, John Hancock, and others. An interactive display will offer the full transcripts of each document.

Conflict and intrigue swirled around the streets of York Town as surely as snow simultaneously whirled about the faithful soldiers at Valley Forge. By putting their pens to paper, the founders of our nation tell of those exciting nine months of 1777-1778 when the eyes of the world were focused on York Town, now known as York, a thriving community in southcentral Pennsylvania.

Through the generosity of individuals and of institutions such as the Massachusetts Historical Society, the Library Company of Philadelphia, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania State Archives, and Lafayette College who shared these letters and other documents with us, we can gaze upon the very words that flowed from the pens of the patriots. Come learn of their trials and triumphs through their own words.

Celebrate York

Also on display at York County Heritage Trust during the Nine Months in York Town celebration is the Celebrate York exhibit.

This exhibit is a tribute to the pride that York has taken in its history. On exhibit for the first time together are the sixteen large oil paintings of the patriots of 1777 commissioned from local artists in 1927 for the 150th anniversary celebration of those important months in 1777 and 1778 while the Continental Congress was in York.

Celebrate York seeks to honor the spirit of celebration that is a part of York's past and present and to mark York's important place in the history of the birth of our nation.
