Library Programs Compare the Articles of
Confederation and the US Constitution and Review the Effect of Camp
Security on Colonial Life
As part of
the "Nine Months in York Town" celebration, local libraries will
hold free programs about the Articles of Confederation and Camp
Security. On Thursday, October 17 at 7 pm, Glatfelter Memorial Library
in Spring Grove will host Dr. John Altman, a professor from York
College of Pennsylvania. Altman will compare the Articles of Confederation
with the U.S. Constitution. Altman will provide a brief historical
background on the Articles, how the government functioned under
the Articles, and how that led to the drafting of the Constitution.
He will also compare and contrast the structure and framework of
the two documents, and lead a discussion about the style of government
if the Articles of Confederation were still in effect today. On
Tuesday, October 29 at 7 pm, Kaltreider-Benfer Library in Red Lion
will hold a program about Camp Security. Author and historian Tom
Schaefer will discuss the effect of Camp Security on colonial life
in York Town. Schaefer's presentation will cover the impact of having
a huge war camp near York, what Camp Security consisted of, and
the potential economic impact of the camp on the York area. "Nine
Months in York Town" is a celebration of the Continental Congress'
stay in York from September 1777 through June 1778. Information
on the library programs and other events is available on the "Nine
Months in York Town" website by logging on to www.yorkheritage.org
and clicking on the Nine Months in York Town logo or by calling
the York County Heritage Trust at 848-1587.
