Articles of Confederation Marker Dedication
On
Wednesday, December 19th, a marker celebrating the November 15th
1777 adoption of the Articles of Confederation was unveiled in Continental
Square in downtown York. York County Heritage Trust, in conjunction
with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission participated
in the dedication of the marker, which reads "Articles of Confederation
Our Nation's first constitution." Funding for the marker was
provided by the Rotary Club of York.
The articles were formally accepted here in
York's Colonial Courthouse over 200 years ago and this marker dedication
is just the first step in a yearlong celebration honoring its 225th
anniversary.
Other upcoming events include a Revolutionary
War encampment, as well as a dramatic invasion of the Colonial Courthouse
on West Market Street in York. Both these events will be a part
of York County Heritage Trust yearly Oyster Fest during the month
of October. The grand finale of this ongoing celebration will be
a spectacular fireworks display/symphonic performance at the York
Expo Center on July 3rd, 2003.
