Sunday, September 29: Opening of Celebrate York Exhibit:
Noon - 3 pm
This new exhibit at the Historical Society Museum, 250 E. Market Street, opens as a tribute to the pride that York has taken in its community and its history. On exhibit for the first time together are the sixteen large oil paintings commissioned from local artists in 1927 for the 150th anniversary celebration. These paintings of the patriots of 1777 were attached to the streetlamp posts in and around the Square.
Celebrate York seeks to honor the spirit of celebration that is a part of York past and present and to mark York's important place in the history of the birth of our nation.
The Brass Ensemble from the Spring Grove High School will perform 18th Century music throughout the afternoon, and light refreshments will be served.
Monday, September 30: Continental Congress Arrives Noon
Marking the arrival of Congressional delegates, the three County Commissioners and York City's Mayor John Brenner - in costumes of 1777 - board a horse-drawn carriage at Continental Square and travel down West Market Street to the Colonial Courthouse, where they will be greeted by a group of school students donning tri-corner hats and playing "Yankee Doodle" on kazoos. James Smith, York Town's famous lawyer and signer of the Declaration of Independence, will welcome the politicians to his hometown. A town crier will announce upcoming events, and Major Richard Banz, Adjutant to his Excellency General Horatio Gates, will drill the students on proper marching procedures.
