York County Heritage Trust Junior Curator Program
Are you a junior and senior in high school and interested in learning what it is like work behind the scenes of a museum? The Trust’s Junior Curator program, limited to ten participants, allows high school juniors and seniors to act as curators for a Trust exhibit. The participants of the program work with the Trust’s collections and Exhibits and Collections Department to determine a topic relevant to York County history and follow all of the steps involved in installing an exhibition. The Junior Curators do all of the work that the Trust’s Curator does for every exhibition.
Most importantly, the Junior Curators get to have fun with history. The Junior Curator program is a great way to meet new people and try new things, from all of the activities completed at the York County Heritage Trust sites to the field trips taken throughout the summer.
Junior Curator Program
On August 26, 2010 the 2010 Junior Curators will unveil Good, Bad, and Ugly: Skeletons in York County's Closet. Running until September 25, 2010, the exhibit will feature York County's hidden secrets regarding medicine; gambling; mursers; hauntings/legends; Abraham Lincoln; Klu Kluk Klan.
Once the students decided to focus on the secrets in York County's history, they dug through the York County Heritage Trust collections and found artifacts and photographs than they could use. Among the items that will be displayed are medicine bottles; a football uniform; KKK uniforms; photographs and pamphlets from the York County Heritage Trust Library/Archives.
Meeting two days a week from June – August, the Junior Curators gained practical experience working with artifacts, creating exhibits, and participating in various other projects they may encounter within the museum profession.
