Through family-oriented activities, costumed interpreters depict York as it was during the Colonial era and the Civil War. At the Colonial Complex, particular emphasis is placed on the nine month stay of the Continental Congress from September 1777 – June 1778 when York served as capital of the United States. At the Bonham House, Victorian life and the 3-day occupation of York County by the Army of Northern Virginia in June 1863 are featured. Activities are held throughout the year. See the Calendar of Events for upcoming events.
The Trust uses its education staff as well as adult and student volunteers to tell rich stories. Training sessions and special trips for members of these programs will be available throughout the year. All volunteers are required to participate in at least one training session per year. Adults are expected to purchase their own clothing and accessories in order to participate in our program. Certain materials may be borrowed from the Trust in order to help you with your impression. Students and children can participate as part of our Junior Docent program. Please contact the Coordinator of Educational Programming at 717-845-2951 for details about the program or to discuss volunteering.
