Weather slowed but did not stop the true bibliophiles from adding to their libraries during the 10th Annual Book Blast. “Books had instant replay long before televised sports” and this was proven with the Members Only night on Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Lined up in the courtyard and extending onto the sidewalk in the stifling heat and humidity, nearly 170 YCHT members made their way into the C-wing where tables were filled with over 20,000 volumes organized by subject. They proceeded to fill their arms with the gently used books previously donated by the York County community. Returning for the second year was the sale of picture frames received with the donation of a framed photograph. Varying in size and condition, the picture frames were a big hit.
Thursday the doors opened to the public and Mother Nature continued to show her dominance. Showers combined with heat and humidity slightly lowered the attendance on Thursday and again on Friday.
The event ended on Saturday with the popular Buck-A-Bag where nearly 300 attendees filled the plastic grocery bags provided Weis Markets for a $1.00. A new successful feature added this year allowed the shoppers to bring their own ‘green’ recyclable bags and fill them also for $1.00. Nearly $10,000 was raised during this four day event almost matching last year’s total. Money raised from this event supports the collections, programs and educational activities of the Trust. The YCHT staff extends many thanks; first to York County community for donating the books, secondly to the many volunteers that survived two weeks of humidity in sorting and selling these books and finally to those that had purchased them. See you next year!
